Manchester United–Aston Villa: another high-scoring clash coming at Old Trafford?

Contents

Manchester United will host Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon in Matchday 10 of the Premier League. The Red Devils are stuck deep in the relegation zone in the league, though their midweek Champions League win may give them a confidence boost. The visitors arrive in better league form, so we expect an exciting, open encounter.

Manchester United have managed just seven points from nine matches, leaving them in 17th place. Michael Carrick’s side have gone winless in the league since August, most recently losing 2–0 away to Chelsea, having previously been beaten 3–0 at home by Bournemouth.

On Tuesday, however, the Red Devils produced a stunning turnaround, coming back from two goals down to beat Roma 3–2 in the Champions League. The win could give the team a real lift, with Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes posing the biggest attacking threat.

Aston Villa have been far more consistent in the league. Unai Emery’s side are unbeaten in their last five matches, picking up three wins and two draws in that run. They beat Manchester City 2–1 and won 1–0 away at Newcastle.

However, the midweek Champions League round didn’t go well for the Birmingham side either, as they suffered a 3–0 defeat away to Barcelona.

Manchester United–Aston Villa: injuries and absences

United will definitely be without Lisandro Martínez due to suspension, while Carlos Baleba picked up an injury against Roma. Luke Shaw, Manuel Ugarte, and Benjamin Šeško remain unavailable, and Marcus Rashford’s participation is in doubt.

For the visitors, Matty Cash is serving a suspension, while Amadou Onana and Matteo Ruggeri are injured. Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s involvement is also uncertain, which could further complicate Emery’s defensive selection.

Manchester United–Aston Villa: betting tips

Based on United’s league results, it would be hard to confidently back a home win, yet their comeback against Roma showed that Carrick’s side still has serious attacking potential.

Aston Villa have looked more convincing in recent weeks, with Nicolas Jackson—on five league goals—standing out as one of the visitors’ most dangerous players.

Our tip: both teams to score.

We feel that neither defence is reliable enough to keep a clean sheet in this clash. United are likely to take the initiative at home, but Villa’s quick transitions and Jackson’s form could pose a serious threat.

As an alternative, we’d also consider the over 2.5 goals market. One statistical model used by major international forecasting sites gives a nearly 68% chance of both teams scoring, also pointing to a high-scoring match.
