Here are the best tips and most important information about the Africa Cup!

If the trend continues on the African Cup, this year will see fewer goals than ever before.

Aside from the top leagues, the main focus for the next 1 month will clearly be the continent of Africa. Where the 2023 African Cup will take place from 13 January to 11 February, hosted by the Ivory Coast, which was originally scheduled to host the 2021 tournament. Here’s what you need to know about the 24-team tournament and here you can find the most important missing players from the top 5 leagues because of the AFCON.

The format will be virtually identical to the European Championship, with 16 teams from each of the six groups of four advancing – the top four groups of three, along with the first and second-placed teams. So there’s relatively little chance of the big boys being eliminated before the knockout stages, although remember, in ’21, Ghana and Algeria, for example, didn’t survive the group stage.

If African Cup of Nations, then a goal drought?

On the black continent, we have almost become accustomed to matches with no goals, and every year this is becoming more and more brutal. So much so that the average number of goals has fallen every year since the 2008 tournament, from over 3 in 2008 to under 2 11 years later.

Average number of goals in African Cups

  • 2008: 3,09
  • 2010: 2,45
  • 2012: 2,38
  • 2013: 2,16
  • 2015: 2,13
  • 2017: 2,06
  • 2019: 1,96
  • 2021: 1,92
  • 2023: ???

If we look at the expected goal scoring this year, we can see that where there is a clear favourite (for example in a Morocco-Tanzania match), the line is 2.5, and where there is a close 90 minutes, the under is favoured at 2.0.

Groups and chances

As 3rd place could still be worth qualification, there is no real reason for the big boys to worry, but there are still some interesting quartets. The first one pits Ivory Coast and Nigeria, but Egypt & Ghana and Senegal & Cameroon are also interesting. Algeria and Morocco could have an easy time of it, though, as they will be looking for a guaranteed qualification and group win.

Perhaps because of the easy draw, the tournament favourites are Morocco, who went out as unbeaten in the quarter-finals last time out, but have still had a strong World Cup in 2022, followed by defending champions Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, but Algeria and Egypt are both under @10.00.
