Fener–Liverpool: former player wants to spoil Liverpool’s party

Contents

On Wednesday, Liverpool continue their Champions League campaign in Istanbul, having won all three of their league-phase matches so far. Fenerbahce, on the other hand, are still without a win and are going through a rough patch. Still, the Turkish side are a dangerous opponent on home turf, so we’re expecting an exciting, goal-filled encounter.

Liverpool have won all three of their Champions League matches so far, beating Atlético Madrid 2–1, LASK 6–3, and Villarreal 4–3. Andoni Iraola’s side have scored 12 goals in three matches, but have also conceded seven at the other end.

The Reds’ five-match winning streak came to an end on Sunday, when Arsenal won 1–0 at Anfield. Their attacking play, however, still holds plenty of potential.

Fenerbahce are in a much tougher spot. The Turkish side have picked up just two points from three Champions League matches and suffered a heavy 6–0 defeat to Aston Villa. The 2–2 draw against Slavia Prague must have stung especially, as they let slip a two-goal lead.

Poor results led to Ismail Kartal’s departure, with former Liverpool player Dirk Kuyt taking over on an interim basis. The Dutchman has yet to turn things around.

Fenerbahce–Liverpool: injuries and absentees

Fenerbahce have serious problems at the back. Jayden Oosterwolde and Kojo Peprah Oppong are both out, while Nathan Aké’s participation is in doubt. Marco Asensio is unavailable due to a knee problem.

For Liverpool, injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong have thinned out their options at right-back. Giovanni Leoni remains out, and Hugo Ekitiké is not yet ready to return.

Fenerbahce–Liverpool betting tips

Given Liverpool’s attacking threat and Fenerbahce’s defensive issues, we see the visitors as favourites. That said, with the Istanbul atmosphere and the Reds’ vulnerable defence, we’re not necessarily expecting an easy match.

Liverpool’s three Champions League matches have produced 19 goals combined, while Fenerbahce have already conceded ten. We believe the visitors’ attacking power and the hosts’ defensive struggles should be enough for over three goals on their own, but the odds for this don’t offer great value for a pre-match bet.

As an alternative, we’d also consider Liverpool to win and over 1.5 goals. The Turks will need to attack in search of points, which could open up plenty of space for the visitors.

Fenerbahce–Liverpool: Wednesday, November 4, 18:45, Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, Istanbul.
