The race is close for the Champions League golden boot
There are only five matches left in the Champions League, where, according to the bookies, no surprises are expected in the top scorer race.
You don’t have to sleep much until the most exciting stage of the Champions League 2023/24 season, because in a few days the semi-finals will be on the table. After one of the best quarterfinals (31 goals scored) of all time, Bayern Munich-Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund-PSG clashes are waiting for us.
Therefore, it may even happen that after 2013, a German home final will be held at Wembley in 2024, although based on the numbers of the bookmakers, there is not a great chance for this. In our current article, we look at the hopefuls for the title of top scorer, the best of which is the star of the Parisians, Kylian Mbappé.
Before we look at the odds, let’s take a quick look at the past. The most successful player in the history of the Champions League is Cristiano Ronaldo (140), followed by Lionel Messi (112), and no one else has reached the dream limit of over 100. The most goals scored in one season is also attributed to CR7, who reached 17 in the 2013/14 season. It is interesting that in none of the last 13 seasons was a single-digit number of goals enough for the title of top scorer, with eight goals, Messi bagged the award last time, back in 2010.
The top scorers of the last five UCL seasons
2022/23: Erling Haaland (Man City) – 12
2021/22: Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) – 15
2020/21: Erling Haaland (Dortmund) – 10
2019/20: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern) – 15
2018/19: Lionel Messi (Barcelona) – 12th
With his double (49) in the second leg against Barcelona, Mbappé tied for ninth place on the all-time list, but the PSG star will probably need even more to become the top scorer. There is a good chance that the striker will join Real Madrid in the summer, and as for now
we only get a 1.50x odds for his top scorer title, which he has never been able to collect before.
Close behind is Harry Kane, whose first season in Munich is a great success. The captain of the English national team scored 40 goals in 41 matches, and scored seven goals in the Champions League. Since he also takes penalties, there is a good chance he won’t stop there. The semi-final will therefore also be about the race between Kane and Mbappé, since Rodrygo, who is closest to them, has only signed up for the scoreboard five times so far.
