The main favourites for EURO2024 according the bookmakers
This summer, Germany will host the 2024 European Football Championship. In this article, we look at which national teams are the biggest favourites for the tournament.
The UEFA European Football Championship stands as one of the most prestigious tournaments in international football. Every four years, the event brings together Europe’s top national teams to compete for the title of continental champion. In 2024, football enthusiasts worldwide eagerly anticipate the spectacle of skill, passion, and rivalry that the tournament promises to deliver.
The 2024 European Football Championship, or simply Euro 2024, will be the 17th European Football Championship.
The tournament takes place in Germany from 14 June to 14 July 2024. Germany will host the tournament for the third time. The defending champions are the Italian national team.
More details about the tournament, the participating countries, the prize money and the TV coverage have already been covered in a previous article.
But now we’re going to take a look at which national teams are considered by the bookmakers to be the biggest favourites for the tournament, just a few months before it starts.
Surprising low odds for Germans
France has been ranked among the world’s strongest teams for years. The French won the 2018 World Cup and played in the 2022 final, although they have not fared well at the European Championships, failing to even make it past the group stage four years ago and crashing out.
England’s chances are also not surprising, although they have never won a European Championship. England reached the final four years ago, but Italy won the trophy on penalty kicks.
The French and English squads have not been any weaker since then, and in Jude Bellingham the Three Roses have a real world star in their midfield, so we think it is right to favour these two teams.
Not so in Germany. In recent years, the Nationaelf has been a letter-perfect team, with practically no outstanding results in world competitions for 5-6 years now. The national team’s form is not very strong, there are constant scandals and a lot of criticism.
In comparison, the betting agencies put them third in the power rankings.
It is certain that the host role and the German crowd will boost the German team’s chances of victory, but we still think that the German team is not at the level to win such a strong tournament.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s victory pays very well
The odds show that although many teams have a realistic chance of winning the final. Almost all other teams are considered a surprise by the bookmakers, apart from the English-French duo.
Portugal, with Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks, are already paying 9 times odds to win the gold medal. Even though they have started a new era under Roberto Martínez after their failed World Cup campaign.
The 39-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo is still the main man and leader of the Portuguese national team, and the striker will almost certainly do his best to help the Portuguese team to victory.
