On Wednesday evening, San Marino – Saint Kitts and Nevis will play a friendly game in the European mini-state. In the latest FIFA rankings, San Marino are in last place (210th), while the Central Americans are 147th. But the visitors are not to be considered favourites, with the bookmakers having the meeting as a complete three-way tie.
We have known San Marino for years, they are clearly the weakest team in Europe. They ended the last qualifying series with 10 defeats, so it’s safe to say that nothing unusual happened. Surprisingly, they have scored in their last three games, but they have not given any of their rivals any trouble.
The mini-state last played a non-European rival in the autumn of 2022, when they drew 0-0 with Seychelles, one of the weakest countries in the African region.
Saint Kitts and Nevis is located in the Caribbean and has a population of around 50,000. It is not surprising that they have been relegated to Nations League C, the weakest league in North and Central America. That series is run in a very similar way to the European competition.
They still managed to pick up four points in the group, losing 2-0 to Saint Lucia and drawing 0-0. These two games are interesting for us because Saint Lucia played San Marino in 2022, when they played a 1-1 draw and won the return leg 1-0 in the Caribbean.
So the relative strengths of the teams are pretty much set, although this time they will meet on European ground, so San Marino could still have the advantage.
Most of the away players come from the English lower leagues or local ones, Cardiff’s player is Romaine Sawyers. The bigger problem is that he didn’t play or fit on the bench recently…
