Who will succeed Thomas Tuchel on the Bayern bench?

The Bayern Munich bench will soon be vacant and it is not yet known who will succeed Tuchel. We’ve looked at the odds from the bookmakers to see who are the biggest favourites.

As you may well have heard in the last few days, Bayern Munich and Thomas Tuchel will part ways at the end of the 2023/24 season, 12 months earlier than planned. Of course, it’s not even out of the question that Tuchel will be sacked earlier, with the club’s qualification for the Bundesliga in jeopardy after the 1-0 first leg thrashing of Lazio, and an eight-point deficit to leaders Leverkusen in the Bundesliga looking almost insurmountable. Although the success against Leipzig did go some way to extinguishing the fire, the numbers are still telling:

Tuchel has lost 44/11 (25%) games as Munich coach. By comparison, Niko Kovac has lost 65/8 (12.3%), Hansi Flick 86/8 (9.3%) and Julian Nagelsmann 84/10 (11.9%) meetings in charge of Bayern.

Not to mention that there is a huge difference between defeat and defeat, and the opponent is no different. Those who have followed the fortunes of Tuchel’s side have seen them regularly produce long periods of soulless and unimaginative play, with unity approaching zero, driven more by individual flashes of brilliance. The stumbles make it look very likely that the team will go without a trophy for the first time since 2011/12. Although interestingly Bayern did manage to triple the year after.

In any case, the big question is who will succeed the Tuchel-Löw duo on the bench. The bookmakers have Xabi Alonso as a huge favourite (@2.50), but we wouldn’t bet on it.

Alonso is on course to win the first gold medal in Bayer Leverkusen’s history, and there is a good chance he will stay in his position afterwards. Why should he stay on, given that he could try his hand in the BL next season? Would also be in with a chance of winning the title, with plenty of experience still to be gained by the young tactician who is still spreading his wings. Not to mention the fact that Liverpool are also in the running for his services, so if he were to leave, it might even be a better option.

The next in line for the bookies is the recently disgraced Mourinho at Roma, but this is just speculation. Bayern would not be a good fit for the Special One. On the other hand, the all-winning Klopp is leaving the Pool bench, he could be a much better chance, but he has previously stated that he would take a year off after his long years at Liverpool. Of course, it’s one thing what he says, but it’s not every day Bayern come knocking with a fat offer, so despite his statement, we think he’s the most likely from the list below.
