A semi-final between the Netherlands and England at a world tournament is not exactly a surprise, but at this European Championship you can be a little wary, as neither team has really impressed their fans so far. England have been the main target of criticism, and in particular England captain Gareth Southgate, who has a whole host of stars to work with, but the England team just won’t gel. Online memes have been about torturous standards and unwatchable football, but after Switzerland were narrowly beaten by the trio of Russians, the cheers have died down a little.

The result is obviously irrevocable, England are through to the last four for the second successive European Championship, so despite all the criticism of Southgate, the results are proving him right.

That said, one can sense a lack of confidence in England, as they are almost three times as likely to beat Kane and co. against the Netherlands, who are much more modest in terms of names.

As far as the squads of the two sides are concerned, neither captain has anything to worry about, as both are reportedly able to prepare for the match with a full squad.

Ronald Koeman will field almost the same starting line-up against England as he did against Turkey.

Gareth Southgate may make two changes, as Guehi’s suspension for the quarter-final has expired and Konsa, although he played well against Switzerland, could return to defence. As will Luke Shaw, who played 42 minutes as a substitute against Switzerland and looks fit and healthy. Up front, the Kane-Bellingham-Foden trio remains, which is a brutally good roster, but should now be something of a permanent fixture.
