Super matches in the cup, here are our picks from Italy

Italian football lovers can look forward to a match between Rome and Lombardy on Wednesday night. Need more?

We have no idea what else we could wish for on a freezing Wednesday night than Lazio-Rome and Milan-Atalanta. And for those who don’t like Italian football (bury yourselves!!!), watch Liverpool-Fulham or Real Madrid-Atlético Madrid. Let’s see what you can bet on if you stay on the Boots!

Lazio-Roma

If you had to guess who was the hero of the last Derby della Capitale in the Italian Cup, few would have guessed Mo Salah, it’s been so long since the two Roma sides met in the Coppa. Then and now, Wolves and Eagles have met in the quarter-finals, and progression will be decided in a single match on Wednesday night.

The better atmosphere is clearly the “home” team, of course the 9 points against Empoli, Frosinone and Udinese can be called a minimum, but the fact that Lazio have not scored in 4 games in Rome derby is an extra (last year 1-0 away, this year 0-0). The table is also tight, although it doesn’t look good that the teams are only in 7th-8th place, so a cup win could be of particular importance.

Interestingly, the bookmakers gave the lower odds to Roma, even though AS has not won an away derby since 2016.

A real tough cup battle, with few goals and we think a Lazio win. In the autumn there were 8 yellow cards in total, of which Sarri received one, while last season there were 9 and 4 cautions respectively. Needless to say, Daniele Orsato will be in charge of the refereeing duties this time around. The veteran fox led the 2012/13 cup final between the two teams (10 caps), while in the league he has a total of 5 Capitale to his name, with an average of 6.6 cards.

Milan-Atalanta

Although the Lombardy derby is not Milan-Atalanta, nor even Inter-Atalanta, it is still just a regional showdown after the Capitale. In Milan, of course, Stefano Pioli’s side are favourites, but it is a rivalry game, with the possibility of upsetting the paperwork. Both teams are looking forward to the meeting in good form, Milan have regained their form, while Atalanta are having a decent season for their side, but there are still 9 points between them in the table.

At the beginning of December, Bergamo beat a much less confident Milan 3-2 at home, but since then the injured have largely returned to the home side. What is interesting, though, is that Pioli’s side are decidedly reserve in their planned starting line-up, with Reijnders, Adli and Loftus-Cheek starting in midfield, while up front only Pulisic is likely to remain of the usual trio, with Leao and Giroud replaced by Jovics and Traoré. There are also players on the sidelines, with Hateboer, Toloi and Touré injured, while Lookman is away for the Africa Cup of Nations, so Scamacca could start.

Milan haven’t lost to an Italian opponent at home since early November, but we really don’t like this start. Too much depends on the starter the industrial city side field, so we’re just going to go with a bold idea here. 19-year-old Chaka Traoré has two goals in 88 minutes of adult action so far.
