#EURO2024

Shocking, but this could be Italy’s European Championship!

The lower half is incredibly easy for the Italians to march through.

After beating Albania, two lousy games followed for Italy, but Zaccagni’s bowling still propelled the defending champions into the last 16. In the first round Italy will face Switzerland, and while many are writing off Luciano Spalletti’s side for the whole of the Euros, there is almost a coded element of success for the Italians in this draw.

Indeed, the difference between the two legs is incredibly extreme, with four of the five big favourites (Spain, Germany, Portugal and France) at the top and England and the Netherlands the strongest teams at the bottom.

This could also be Italy’s way to the final, with Switzerland on paper followed by England and then the Netherlands, which is not an easy route, but still easier than, say, a Spanish-German-French trio for a chance at gold.

But what is the case for Italy?

If I had to sum it up in one sentence, it’s that they are Italian. Almost nobody expected the Squadra Azzurra at the 2020 Euros, and while it’s true that Roberto Mancini had a much more experienced squad then, there are still plenty of strengths in the current squad.

Although the forwards have not played well so far, the potential is there in Scamacca, and behind a very good defence is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Donnarumma has proved he can be counted on at this EURO, and if he were to take penalties in any game, he would surely make Italy the favourites to win the shoot-out.

Three years ago, after a flawless group stage, Italy won three of their four games after normal time, and the experience of Jorginho, Barella, Chiesa or Di Lorenzo could be worth a lot.

While it is arguable that we have not seen much good from Spalletti’s side so far, it is only Austria who have really won our hearts in the lower half of the group stage. That easy draw, winning mentality and Italian virtue could be worth at least a semi-final in our opinion, but I’m still hoping for a bolder dream.
