Despite Flick’s arrival, Real’s title odds are the lowest in almost 20 years
A new era begins for Barcelona with the arrival of Hansi Flick, but the bookies expect Real dominance to continue.
As expected, the official announcement has been made and the Barcelona head coach is now called Hansi Flick. The German has signed a two-year contract with the Catalans until the summer of 2026, and according to reports, he will receive a rather modest salary. The 59-year-old coach most recently held the post of national team captain of the German national team, but poor results saw him sacked in September 2023.

Although the national team adventure didn’t really work out for Flick, he had previously enjoyed success after success with Bayern Munich. With Bayern, he won the BL, Club World Cup, European Super Cup, German Championship, German Cup and German Super Cup in 2020, and this year he was voted Coach of the Year by UEFA, DFB and IFFHS.
“I would like to thank everyone involved. It’s a great honour and a dream for me to coach Barcelona and work for this club. I can’t wait to get started. This is an incredible club. Since I arrived, I’ve seen that everyone loves this club and everyone is doing everything they can to make it a success.The philosophy of the club fits very well with mine: possession and attacking football. Those are the aspects I like. That’s what we will work on,” said the German coach in his first managerial address, and he is certainly keen to add some new players to the squad.
Kimmich could be the biggest arrival
Although it is well known that Barcelona’s financial resources remain modest, several names have been mentioned in the Catalan press. Flick’s first target is rumoured to be former player Josua Kimmich, who he is desperate to have in his squad and the player is reportedly keen on a move to Catalonia.
Of course, to buy new players, Barcelona will also have to part with some of their current players, so the future of Sergi Roberto, Romelu or the on-loan Joao Félix and Joao Cancelo is in question. The real work has not yet started, but by the end of June, Flick could have a rough idea of the squad that will be ready for the start of next season.
New era at Barca, but Real Madrid dominance on the horizon
The 2023/24 season absolutely belonged to Real Madrid in Spain, but we could be talking about Europe on Sunday. The Royal Guard have become an almost invincible machine under Carlo Ancelotti, so there’s little reason to think that this performance can deteriorate so much in the coming year or years. It is true that the retirement of Toni Kroos, considered the driving force and brains of the team, could be a sensitive issue, but the arrival of Kylian Mbappé could dampen any concerns.

Many expect the arrival of the French striker to usher in a new dynasty, with the trio of Bellingham, Vinícius, Rodrygo and the teenage duo of Endrick-Güler predicting a very bright future for the Blancos.
Fact is, when these players are in top form, they are capable of amazing performances, and if they can be ‘put together’, they could become a truly formidable team.
The bookmakers prefer this line, as the final winning markets for next season have published by far the clearest odds on the Real-Barca race in recent years.
The last time the odds on Real Madrid winning the title were this low was back in the days of the Galacticos, and even in the post-Messi era, the odds were around even.
So Hansi Flick has arrived at Barcelona at a time when Real Madrid could be entering a very bright and successful period. It will be interesting to see if the German can break Madrid’s dominance…
