Frankie Edgar Set To Battle Once Again

There is certainly no rest for the wicked when it comes to the UFC and no sooner has the dust settled on the incredible “Miocic vs Cormier 3”, then another offering appears on the horizon this weekend.

The weight class may be a lot lighter when it comes to main-eventers and although it will not be two Heavyweights squaring off at the top of the card like last week, these fearsome foes can certainly pack a punch.

Topping the bill for the latest UFC on ESPN offering, are the Bantamweight pairing of Pedro Munhoz and former Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar – a fight that was originally scheduled for last month’s UFC 251 event.

However, it was then subsequently bumped from the 251 event, in order to bolster the card for UFC Fight Island 1 and with those best laid plans in place, once again schedules were disrupted due to a combatant testing positive for COVID-19.

This time it was Munhoz who was the unfortunate party and although his diagnosis would mean subsequent further delay, he and Edgar will finally go to war within the UFC’s APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. What makes this such an interesting clash, is the fact that both fighters approach their next duel having lost their last showing and in the case of Edgar, a win this weekend is of far greater importance.

Because the New Jersey based fighter, is not just trying to bounce back after a single defeat but two in a row and after being bested by both Max Holloway and Chan Sung Jung last year, he is looking at 2020 as some form of redemption.

In the first of those 2019 defeats, he was contesting for the Featherweight title and although he went the distance against the 28-year old Holloway, the judges gave a unanimous decision against him.

Foiled in his plans for Featherweight supremacy, a trip to South Korea at the tail end of the year then ensued and with his name once again at the head of the card, he was handed by a TKO by the fighter who is perhaps better known as “the Korean Zombie”

The second straight loss and one at the hands of Chan Sung Jung means that Edgar’s overall MMA record now stands at 23-8-1 and with president Dana White keen to keep his fighters on his toes, a third defeat in a row may have more serious repercussions.

Whether it is redemption or his status as a UFC employee that he is competing for, the 38-year-old Edgar is certainly not getting any younger and if Pedro Munhoz can come out on top, it may end up being his last appearance in the octagon.

While Munhoz himself is yet to fight in 2020 and after seeing his three-fight winning streak ended at UFC 238 at the hands of Aljamin Sterling, the Brazilian fighter will be keen to return to winning ways this weekend.

The clash between these two fighters took place in June of last year and although Munhoz lasted the distance, he would also fail to find favour with the judges, as a unanimous decision would then go against him.

After that loss, it means Munhoz’s MMA record currently stands at 18-4 and although being second best to Sterling will still smart, the 33-year-old will look to convert that frustration into a performance that secures victory.

Especially as the bookmakers have him as the moneyline favourite for this encounter and at odds of -240 when compared to Edgar’s +100, you would have to say that the Sao Paulo born figher has an overwhelming amount of confidence from the bookmakers.

However, there is always a danger that confidence such as this can be misplaced and when you consider that Edgar with his more senior status, can be labelled as a wily old veteran, he will know every trick in the book come Saturday. A book that might just lead him to an important victory.
