Two top league “mid-table” teams, but we can still declare a winner in the French-Italian match.
Unlike the Roma-Leverkusen match, the Italian team is the favourite in the Marseille-Atalanta meeting. So although the odds suggest that the home final in Italy will not be up to the Bergamo side, the French will have something to say about it. Let’s see what we can expect at the Vélodrome!
The clear goal for both sides is to qualify for the Champions League, but the only way the French can do that is by winning the Europa League. The long-established club are on their fourth manager in Jean-Louis Gasset this season, but a poor spring campaign has seen them fail to break into the top 4 in Ligue 1. As a result, Olimpique are mathematically unlikely to finish in the top four, and could even face the embarrassing prospect of not competing in any series next season.
Marseille, on the other hand, are doing well in the Europa League so far, with the Brighton-Ajax-AEK treble proving no easy task, while they have fallen victim to Shakhtar Donetsk, Villarreal and Benfica in the knockout stages. Marseille’s only hope is to win the Europa League, and that is what they can count on.
At Atalanta are in a slightly better position, with 5 Italian Champions League qualifiers opening up opportunities for Gasperini’s side. If Atalanta win their remaining game, they will lead Roma by one point and Lazio by five, and will also be hosting the already eliminated Salernitana at the weekend.
Lookman’s team’ss run to the last 4 was a notch smoother as they finished unbeaten at the top of the group, and although Sporting forced them into extra time, the 3-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield Road was one of the surprises of the season.
Marseille are unbeaten at home and Atalanta are unbeaten away in this season’s international cup.
Gasperini is slightly better in terms of absentees, but the withdrawals of Hien and Holm are not good here either. On the other side, the roster is more impressive, with Meite, Mbemba and Merlin injured and Gigot suspended.
There is no breakout season for either team, but Atalanta look the better side to us at the moment. Gasperini’s expertise, Lookman and Scamacca’s form could guarantee a goal or two from the Italians, which could give Atalanta the advantage.
